To participate in the Parent Taught Driver Education program, please make sure that you meet the requirements.
Before beginning the Parent-Taught driving course, you MUST first complete the Parent-Taught Driver Education Instructor Designation Services Request and purchase the Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE) Program Guide from the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR).
TDLR charges a separate fee for the PTDE Program guide. This is separate fee that you will need to pay to TDLR.
STEPS TO GET STARTED

Your instructor can be a parent, guardian, or other designated adult. Check the eligibility requirements. Review and check eligibility:

Order your PTDE packet from the TDLR before you get started. Get it by mail or instantly by email.

Finish the first 6 hours of the course, then take the written permit test online.
Take the certificate along with the other necessary documents to the DPS office to take the vision test and get your learner’s permit.

Finish the rest of the course along with the 44 hours of driving in the vehicle with the parent instructor.
Once you’ve completed the course along with the 44 hours of driving, then you are ready for your provisional license.
- You must be between 16 and 17 years old.
- In additional, you must complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver (ITTD) Program within the previous 90 days of taking the skills test.
- And then successfully pass the driving test.
Note: You must have held the valid learner’s permit for at least 6 months.
Note: The parent instructor on record must accompany the student to the DPS Office when you apply for the Provisional License.
